When it comes to the benefits of cannabis, you always hear what the plant can do for people. More recently, people have been interested in using it to help their pets manage various ailments. While there’s a shortage of research on the effects of cannabis on pets, there is some promising anecdotal evidence that CBD may provide relief for our animal companions. Let’s take a look at some of the latest CBD news for pet lovers.

CBD Shows Promise for Various Ailments

There aren’t many studies showing the effects of CBD on animals, but there are a few. Most of what we know currently is purely anecdotal. One study performed in 2018 found that CBD may help to reduce inflammation in dogs with osteoarthritis. Scientists gave the participants 2mg or 8mg of CBD per kilogram of weight and found that 80% of dogs showed improvement in their symptoms. Another small study in 2019 found that CBD, along with regular anti-seizure medication, may help to reduce seizures in epileptic dogs.

Other research indicates CBD may help to treat a range of ailments in both dogs and cats:

  • Pain
  • Anxiety (including separation anxiety or anxiety caused by loud noises such as fireworks or thunderstorms)
  • Depression

Pet Owners Can Find an Array of CBD Products

Some great news for pet owners interested in treating their animal friends with CBD is that there is a vast selection of products. There are tinctures, infused treats, capsules, and topicals. Many companies have flavored their treats to make them more appealing to your cat or dog’s taste buds. While you have your pick of products, you should exercise some caution when buying and administering CBD to your furry friend. There is currently very little research on the safe and effective use of CBD for pets. Additionally, no federally regulated standards exist to ensure that cannabis companies are doing their due diligence on such products.

If you’re unsure about any CBD product, do your research first. Check out the company’s website and read some reviews. Make sure that the products are third-party lab tested. If the results aren’t readily available, don’t hesitate to contact customer service. Be wary of any company that tries to dodge your questions or won’t give you an answer.

California Regulations on CBD Infused Pet Products

CBD infused pet products are currently prohibited at the federal level. While the interstate sale of CBD products is still largely illegal, it could be legal depending on certain state’s legislation. Again, since there is currently no FDA oversight, standards and regulations are dependent on each state’s individual laws regarding these products. Ultimately, this may make it difficult to fully research the brands and products offered. Be sure to know your state’s laws to ensure that the products you’re looking into are the safest available for your pet.

For example, although cannabis companies in California can produce CBD pet products and dispensaries can sell them, they are not allowed to advertise such products as therapeutic or medicinal. Vets, especially, are not allowed to prescribe, administer, or carry CBD infused pet products in their clinics.  For the longest time, vets weren’t even allowed to discuss cannabis, or even CBD, with pet owners. In many states, including California, they risked losing their license if they did. However, in September 2018, a new California bill passed that eliminated punishment for vets that discuss and answer client questions regarding CBD usage for pets.

Stay Informed About CBD News

While there’s still a lot that we don’t know about cannabis and CBD for our animal companions, one thing is for certain – pet owners all over the country are looking for alternatives to conventional medications for their canine and feline friends. More studies and research will certainly reveal how beneficial CBD can be for our pets. And, perhaps one day, more states will follow in the shoes of California and allow licensed and trusted veterinarians to discuss CBD (and cannabis) as a potential treatment option.
